How many Pico Laser types are there?

Many people may not realize that “Pico Laser” is not a single machine — but a category of laser technologies available in various types, models, and brands. These include PicoSure, PicoSure Pro, PicoPlus, Enlighten, PicoWay, and Discovery Pico, each designed to address different skin concerns.

In this article, we will explore how many Pico Laser types exist, how they differ, and how to select the right device based on your specific skin concerns.

Table of Content : Pico Laser Types

6 Popular Pico Laser Types

Pico Laser is an advanced technology that uses picosecond pulse duration (one trillionth of a second) to deliver energy rapidly and efficiently to target pigmentation concerns.

In Thailand, the most commonly used Pico Laser types — all of which are US-FDA approved — include PicoSure, PicoSure Pro, PicoPlus, Enlighten, PicoWay, and Discovery Pico. Each device offers unique technical features, benefits, and treatment applications — which we’ll break down in the following sections.

1. PicoSure

PicoSure is the world’s first picosecond laser, developed by CynoSure (USA). It uses a 755 nm wavelength, which is highly effective for targeting melanin. This makes it suitable for treating melasma, freckles, dark spots, and acne marks.

It also stimulates collagen production, improving skin brightness and overall smoothness. A key feature is the Focus Lens Array, which helps disperse energy evenly and reduces the risk of side effects.

2. PicoSure Pro

PicoSure Pro

PicoSure Pro is an upgraded version of PicoSure, maintaining the same 755 nm wavelength but delivering higher power and enhanced treatment efficiency. It performs exceptionally well in treating melasma, freckles, and various tattoo types.

The device also features new operating modes and upgraded handpieces, allowing doctors to adjust treatment more precisely based on each patient’s skin condition.

3. PicoPlus

PicoPlus
PicoPlus device

PicoPlus is a picosecond laser developed by Lutronic (South Korea). Its main advantage is its multiple wavelengths — 1064, 532, 595, and 660 nm — enabling comprehensive treatment of various skin issues, including melasma, freckles, acne scars, deep scars, and multicolored tattoos.

It also supports collagen stimulation for smoother, younger-looking skin.

4. Discovery Pico

Discovery Pico
Discovery Pico

Discovery Pico, developed by Quanta System (Italy), uses Dual-Pulse technology that delivers both Picosecond and Nanosecond energy in a single device. This provides flexibility and precision for treating a wide range of pigmentation issues, including melasma, freckles, acne marks, deeply embedded pigmentation, and tattoos.

5. Enlighten

Enlighten, produced by Cutera (USA), uses 1064 nm and 532 nm wavelengths. It features three operating modes — Picosecond, Nanosecond, and Micropulse — giving doctors versatility in customizing treatment depending on the patient’s skin type and concerns.

It effectively treats melasma, freckles, acne marks, tattoos, and overall skin rejuvenation.

6. PicoWay

PicoWay is a picosecond laser by Candela (USA) that offers multiple wavelengths — 1064 nm, 532 nm, and 785 nm. Its key advantage is its ultra-short pulse duration, allowing extremely precise and rapid energy delivery. This minimizes heat buildup, reduces pain, and lowers the risk of side effects.

PicoWay is excellent for tattoo removal and pigmentation treatments.

How Are Pico Laser Types Different?

Different Pico Laser models vary mainly in three technical aspects — all of which influence treatment effectiveness:

1. Pulse Duration

Pulse duration refers to how long the laser releases energy (measured in picoseconds). Shorter pulse durations deliver energy faster and more accurately, breaking down pigmentation efficiently while minimizing heat and reducing side effects such as redness or burns.

2. Peak Power

Peak Power is the maximum energy the device can deliver per pulse. Higher peak power helps break down dense or stubborn pigmentation more effectively, often reducing the number of sessions needed.

3. Wavelength

Each Pico Laser type uses different wavelengths such as 532 nm, 755 nm, and 1064 nm, which determine how deeply the energy penetrates and which pigmentation colors it targets.

  • Shorter wavelengths treat superficial pigmentation
  • Longer wavelengths reach deeper pigmentation and darker-colored tattoos

Comparison Table of Pico Laser Types

Brand / Model Manufacturer (Country) Pulse Duration Peak Power Wavelengths
PicoSure Pro Cynosure (USA) 750 ps 0.36 GW 755 nm

PicoWay Candela (USA) 450 ps / 375 ps 0.89 GW 1064 / 532 / 785 nm
Discovery Pico Quanta System (Italy) 370 ps 1.33–1.8 GW 1064 / 532 nm

Pico Laser technology is now one of the most widely used solutions for treating pigmentation-related skin concerns. While all devices fall under the “Pico Laser” category, their mechanisms differ slightly depending on the manufacturer and the technology used.

At V Square Clinic, we use PicoSure Pro, PicoPlus and Discovery Pico because they effectively target a wide range of pigmentation issues. These devices help reduce melasma, freckles, dark spots, post-acne marks, and also improve skin texture from acne scarring.

In addition to Pico Laser, we also provide multiple advanced facial laser technologies — such as Fotona, Sylfirm X Plus, and Bellalux Lite — ensuring that patients receive the most suitable treatment based on their skin concerns.

With a diverse range of laser devices, our doctors can customize multiple lasers for each case to achieve the best possible results and address all skin concerns comprehensively.

What Modes Do Pico Laser Types Have?

Pico Lasers do not operate with just one mode. Each device features different handpieces and specialized modes depending on the brand.

Here, we will use PicoSure Pro as an example — one of the primary Pico Laser devices used at our clinic. Its modes can be categorized into three main groups based on the handpieces.

PicoSure Pro modes

Traditional Handpiece (Flat Lens)

The Flat Lens is the standard handpiece that delivers laser energy in a uniform pattern across the entire spot size. It does not focus energy into micro-spots, making it suitable for treatments requiring consistent and evenly distributed energy, such as:

  • Pigmentation and tattoo removal: Breaks down pigmentation in tattoos, freckles, melasma, and dark spots — especially deep-set pigment
  • Dark spot reduction and tone correction: Helps brighten dull skin and improve overall skin tone

In some contexts, this handpiece is referred to as the “Fix Lens”, a commonly used term within the laser community.

Focus Lens Handpiece (Focus Lens Array)

The Focus Lens Array is a signature feature found in many Pico Laser models, including the latest Platinum Focus Lens on the PicoSure Pro. This handpiece concentrates high-intensity laser energy to create Laser-Induced Optical Breakdown (LIOB) within the epidermis. LIOB stimulates new collagen and elastin production without damaging the skin surface, making it ideal for:

  • Acne scar laser treatment
  • Smoothing fine lines and superficial wrinkles
  • Refining and tightening enlarged pores
  • Skin rejuvenation for smoother, more youthful skin

Additional Operating Mode (Turbo Mode)

Turbo Mode is not a handpiece; it is an enhanced energy-setting mode available in certain devices, such as the PicoSure Pro.

This mode increases both the energy output and the delivery speed, making it suitable for:

  • Stubborn tattoos: Especially tattoos that have undergone multiple treatments and still show pigment retention
  • Deep-set pigmentation: Helps break pigment particles into finer fragments for faster clearance

This supplementary mode allows doctors to fine-tune treatments for complex or resistant pigmentation concerns.

PicoPlus also features its own specialized handpieces, each designed for different treatment goals.

PicoPlus modes

Pico-Zoom Handpiece

This handpiece is designed for targeted, high-intensity treatments. It is commonly used for deep pigmentation removal and tattoo removal (including black and colored ink). The concentrated energy helps break pigment effectively without damaging surrounding skin tissue.

Pico-Toning Handpiece

The Pico-Toning handpiece is designed to even out overall skin tone and reduce superficial pigmentation. It delivers gentle, well-dispersed energy suitable for treating:

  • Dull or uneven skin tone
  • Post-acne marks
  • Mild pigmentation

It also stimulates collagen production, resulting in smoother, brighter skin.

Fractional Handpiece

The Fractional handpiece, also known as the Dual Focused Dots, delivers hundreds of microscopic laser beams into the skin. These micro-injuries create controlled spaces beneath the epidermis, stimulating new collagen and elastin production.

It is ideal for:

  • Acne scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Overall resurfacing to improve texture and smoothness

Gold Handpiece

The Gold handpiece, also known as Gold Toning, uses a 595 nm wavelength, which is well absorbed by vascular structures and certain pigments. It is suitable for treating conditions involving skin redness, such as:

  • Red post-acne marks
  • Facial telangiectasia (broken capillaries)
  • Redness from inflammatory skin conditions

Ruby Handpiece

The Ruby handpiece, or RuVY Touch, uses a 660 nm wavelength that is safe for superficial pigmentation and provides excellent melanin absorption.

It is ideal for:

  • Superficial freckles
  • Epidermal melasma
  • Dark spots
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)

It breaks down pigment finely while minimizing the risk of post-treatment darkening.

The choice of handpiece depends on each individual’s skin concerns. Our doctors will assess your skin condition and select the most appropriate handpiece to ensure the safest and most effective outcome.

Why Do Pico Laser Modes Have Different Names Across Clinics?

Pico Laser devices such as PicoSure Pro or PicoPlus each come with standardized operating modes. However, in real practice, different clinics may rename these modes to make them easier for patients to understand and remember. Examples include:

  • Pico Bright, Toning Mode, Brightening Laser: These names are often used to describe Pico-Toning, highlighting its brightening and skin-clarifying effects.
  • Skin Rejuvenation Mode: Some clinics use this name to refer to the Focus Lens Array, emphasizing its role in collagen stimulation and skin-smoothing benefits.

What matters most is that doctors clearly explain the actual mechanism behind each treatment, ensuring that patients understand which standardized mode is being used — helping avoid confusion.

How Much Does Pico Laser Cost?

Pico Laser pricing varies widely depending on multiple factors, which is why different clinics may offer different rates. Key factors include:

1. Type of Pico Laser device

PicoSure Pro and PicoPlus are among the most popular devices in Thailand. Each model has different technologies and handpieces, which influence pricing.

  • PicoPlus: typically 5,000–8,000 THB per session
  • PicoSure Pro: typically 10,000–20,000 THB per session

2. Skin concerns being treated

  • Full-face treatments such as brightening or reducing general dark spots: usually 3,000–15,000 THB per session
  • Targeted treatments such as tattoo removal, nevus removal, or deep pigment lesions: priced by treatment size, starting from a few hundred to several thousand baht per square centimeter
  • Acne scar treatment using the Fractional handpiece: usually higher than standard toning

3. Number of sessions and promotions

Pico Laser requires multiple sessions for optimal results. Most clinics offer package pricing, lowering the cost per session compared to single-session rates.
